Loughborough University has a reputation for sporting excellence. Across all sports Loughborough has shaped some of the highest performing athletes and students in the world. Rugby has been an area where Loughborough has particularly excelled, since being established, the Club has won the universities’ rugby championship title (UAU and BUSA) an unparalleled 27 times, more than any other university and in the process, produced 65 men’s full international capped players from every Home Nation, 17 of whom were also British and Irish Lions, and a further 41 women’s full international capped players. In addition to players, numerous Loughborough Students Rugby alumni have gone on to hold international coaching roles or work in senior levels of rugby administration.
Alongside the significant success in the 15s game, Loughborough have shown particular prowess in the 7s format. The number of men’s and women’s 7s internationals that the university has produced is a difficult number to come by due to the sheer number of them. In recent years Loughborough have competed in the BUCS 7s competitions as well as running an elite side who has entered the Super 7s series on the men’s side and other high-profile tournaments such as the Middlesex 7s on the women’s side.
